30 th JULY 2004 & 2029 AD , THE SYMBOLS...

30 July 2004, Gopal Singh Rana, the last man to walk out of Tehri (Garhwal) with his emaciated buffalo and a twig in his hand. This afternoon he looks at his village for the last time from the street bend of Pratap Inter college. Bhilangna and Bhagirathi's waters have already inundated the Tehri bus stand. Tehri Dam is complete, Asia's biggest and the fourth biggest Dam in the world (260.5 mts high).

This could be a poignant last shot for a film. Last man, last animal and the last twig departing from their lands forever and ever. There used to be a river on the edges of the city, now the city is inside the river. There will be no return for Gopal Singh, the adamant last man of Tehri.

Well this was on 30th July 2004.

I read and I am told that our date with global disaster(?) is estimated in between 2029 and 2050. If humanity can restrict its carbon emissions to 160-190 giga tonnes, it may escape the catastrophic consequences of global warming. The ominous news is that the world emitted more than 9 giga tonnes last year and the figure is growing. Meaning that we have reached the city gates of global warming disaster. Our planet may soon become unworthy(?) for living, it may not be able to sustain its living species. Our Earth will outlive us, its inheritors. Befitting Nemesis !

This is where Noam Chomsky becomes relevant. He writes that he is aware that the "missions to the moon" are (now) plans of some nations, whom he calls, 'the minority of the opulent' to colonize Mars, Moon etc. That he is aware of some experiments which are going on, to render huge populations of the world as 'superfluous'. And this 'opulent minority' knows that resources are fast depleting the waste piling alarmingly, due to human greed.

Okay... the punch lines :

Who would like to be the next Gopal Singh Rana,
Who would like to board the last rocket to the moon,
Who would like to be that last man to leave mother earth forever,
......or a woman ?

  2. We have not even spared space, which is full of materials discharged by satellites and other space crafts moving around in the orbit of earth. Neither did we spare Mount Everest, which is witness to cans, glasses and other waste left behind by adventurous mountaineers.

And now earth will not save us from its doom.

  3. The Matrix had a scene where the computer simulated Agent Smith sneers at Morpheus... Saying humanity is a disease... It multiplies and multiplies till all available resources are consumed... What all do we need? Evolution v2.0?
